Harold Washington College is extremely affordable and student counselors will assist students with financial aid if needed. How do I apply for entrance into the Harold Washington College Music Program?

Harold Washington College has an open enrollment policy. This means that all eligible students are accepted. Contact Matthew Shevitz at the contact listed in the answer to the previous question so that the music faculty may determine which classes you should take. What classes, programs of study, or instrument lessons do you offer?

The Harold Washington College Music Program offers a wide array of classes including class piano, music history, music theory, music technology, music business, Jazz studies, popular music, etc. Also offered are classes that focus on music performance such as the Jazz/Pop Ensemble and Chorus. The Music Program offers private instruction in practically every instrument. Will I be required to take entrance exams or audition before entering the Harold Washington music Program?

Students are required to give a brief audition/interview using their instrument of choice. This is simply to determine the appropriate placement of the student within the program. If a student has had previous study in the subject of Music Theory, then that student may take a placement exam in order to determine the correct Music Theory class for that student.

Am I required to provide my own instrument of study?

Yes. Each student is required to provide his or her own instrument. However, all students will have access to the Piano Lab, which is equipped with 18 electric pianos, and to the practice rooms, which are equipped with acoustic pianos. A drum kit is also provided for percussion students.
